🛠️ QUICK ANSWER

How does this site make money?

South Jersey Contractors earns revenue from advertising. Directory listings themselves are free and editorial — a contractor cannot buy a listing, buy a better position, or buy what we write about them. Every paid placement on this site is labeled so you can tell the difference at a glance.

You should always know who’s paying whom. Here’s the full accounting.

What Money Can Buy Here

Contractors can purchase advertising on this site. Specifically:

  • Display advertising — banner and sidebar placements, marked as advertising.
  • Sponsored content — a contractor-supplied article or profile, labeled “Sponsored” at the top before you read a word of it.
  • Category and page sponsorships — a labeled slot on a trade or town page, positioned outside the editorial listings.

Details and current rates are on our Advertise page.

What Money Cannot Buy Here

This is the part that matters, so we’ll be blunt about it.

Can a contractor pay for… Answer
A spot in the directory No — listings are free and editorial
A higher position in the listings No
A more favorable write-up No
Removal of a competitor No
An exception to our verification checks No
A labeled advertising placement Yes — clearly marked

A contractor with a lapsed New Jersey registration cannot buy their way onto this site at any price. A contractor who passes every check gets listed whether they ever spend a dollar with us or not. Those two sentences are the whole policy.

How to Spot Paid Content on This Site

Every paid placement carries a visible label. You will never have to guess.

  • “Sponsored” — the contractor paid for this content and had input on what it says.
  • “Advertisement” — a paid display placement, written by the advertiser.
  • “✓ Vetted” — an editorial listing that passed our verification checks. Not paid, not purchasable. This badge is never applied to advertising.

If you ever find something on this site that looks paid and isn’t labeled, tell us — that’s a mistake on our end and we want to fix it.

Why We Don’t Sell Leads

We don’t broker, auction, or resell homeowner inquiries, and we don’t take a percentage of any job.

That’s the mechanism worth understanding, because it’s the one that shapes what you see everywhere else. On lead-generation platforms, the homeowner’s contact information is the product — it gets sold to several contractors at once, all of whom paid to receive it, all of whom then race to call you. It’s why one form submission turns into five phone calls by dinnertime. It also means the businesses you see aren’t the ones that were vetted hardest; they’re the ones that bid highest.

Because our revenue comes from labeled advertising rather than from your phone number, we have no financial reason to steer you toward one contractor over another. If a roofer in Mount Laurel and a roofer in Sewell both pass our checks, we don’t earn more when you pick one over the other.

Editorial Independence

Advertisers get no advance review of our editorial content and no influence over which contractors we list or delist.

Concretely: an advertiser cannot see a cost guide before it publishes, cannot request changes to a comparison, and cannot have a competitor’s listing removed. If an advertiser stops passing our verification checks, their listing comes down — the advertising relationship doesn’t protect it. And if an advertiser cancels, their editorial listing stays exactly where it was.

🛠️ SOUTH JERSEY TIP

Whether you find a contractor here, on a national platform, or from a neighbor on Kings Highway, run the same two checks before you sign: look up their 13VH number at njconsumeraffairs.gov/hic, and ask for a current certificate of insurance. Takes two minutes. Saves entire seasons of regret.
