You should always know who’s paying whom. Here’s the full accounting.

What Money Can Buy Here

Contractors can purchase advertising on this site. Specifically:

• Upgraded profiles — a website button, click-to-call and a Google reviews link on the contractor’s directory profile.
• Featured spots — a featured position on a trade page, town page or best-of guide, and homepage tiles. Only businesses that have already passed our checks can buy one.
• Display advertising — banner and sidebar placements, marked as advertising.
• Sponsored content — a contractor-supplied article or profile, labeled “Sponsored” at the top before you read a word of it.
• Category and page sponsorships — a labeled slot on a trade or town page, positioned outside the editorial listings.

What Money Cannot Buy Here

This is the part that matters, so we’ll be blunt about it.

A contractor with a lapsed New Jersey registration cannot buy their way onto this site at any price. A contractor who passes every check gets listed whether they ever spend a dollar with us or not. Those two sentences are the whole policy.

How to Spot Paid Content on This Site

Sponsored articles and display ads are labeled. Upgraded profiles, featured spots and homepage tiles are the paid tiers described above.

• “Sponsored” — the contractor paid for this content and had input on what it says.
• “Advertisement” — a paid display placement, written by the advertiser.
• “✓ Vetted” — the business passed our verification checks. The badge can’t be bought on its own: paid and free listings earn it exactly the same way.

If you ever find something on this site that looks paid and isn’t labeled, tell us — that’s a mistake on our end and we want to fix it.

Contractors Who Are Also Marketing Clients

The owner of South Jersey Contractors also runs a local marketing agency, and some of the contractors listed here are clients of that agency. Being a client is part of what some of them pay for, and we’d rather tell you than have you find out. Agency clients go through the same registration, insurance and reputation checks as everyone else, and a client that stops passing them comes off the site.

Why We Don’t Sell Leads

We don’t broker, auction, or resell homeowner inquiries, and we don’t take a percentage of any job.

That’s the mechanism worth understanding, because it’s the one that shapes what you see everywhere else. On lead-generation platforms, the homeowner’s contact information is the product — it gets sold to several contractors at once, all of whom paid to receive it, all of whom then race to call you. It’s why one form submission turns into five phone calls by dinnertime. It also means the businesses you see aren’t the ones that were vetted hardest; they’re the ones that bid highest.

Our revenue comes from advertising and listing upgrades, not from your phone number. When you contact a contractor you found here, you call them directly, nobody else gets your number, and we don’t take a cut of the job.

Editorial Independence

Paying decides how a contractor is shown. It never decides whether a contractor is listed or delisted.

Concretely: an advertiser cannot skip the checks, cannot change a competitor’s Google rating or review count, and cannot have a competitor’s listing removed. If an advertiser stops passing our verification checks, their listing comes down — the advertising relationship doesn’t protect it. And if an advertiser cancels, they keep their free basic listing.
