FenceUSA (Turnersville) — the largest operation on the list, at the Route 42 location that used to be Amechi Fence. Reviews praise individual salespeople by name and one-day vinyl installs; a few mention office-communication hiccups, which is what you’d expect at 500 reviews. Deptford Fence (Woodbury) — reviewers repeatedly say it came in lowest of four or five quotes and still installed straight. One Solution Outdoor Design (Vineland) — a landscape and hardscape company that also installs vinyl fence; the Cumberland County pick if you want the fence, the patio and the tree work from one crew. Alenco (Medford) — supply yard plus install crews, long-standing in Burlington County; reviews mention commercial repeat work. Fence permits in South Jersey: there are two, and most guides only mention one
This is where South Jersey fence jobs go sideways. Under the state Uniform Construction Code (N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7), a fence up to six feet tall on a one- or two-family home is ordinary maintenance — no construction permit. People read that and stop. But the construction code isn’t the only rulebook. Your township’s zoning ordinance almost always requires a separate zoning permit before you build, and that’s the one with the setback rules, the height caps, and the “good side out” requirements.
Mount Laurel is a clean example: residential fences are capped at six feet, a zoning permit is required to construct, enlarge or alter a fence, and fences can’t sit in the front-yard setback — and those rules apply inside the planned communities too. Cherry Hill, Washington Township, Deptford, Gloucester Township and Voorhees all run their own version. The zoning office will want a property survey showing the fence line, which is why so many reviews above mention “they helped with the survey.” If your survey is older than the last owner, budget for a new one.
- Over six feet → construction permit under the UCC on top of zoning.
- Corner lots → sight-triangle rules at the intersection; expect a height limit near the corner.
- Pinelands towns (parts of Medford, Shamong, Hammonton, Waterford) → Pinelands Commission review can apply on larger lots.
- HOA communities → the HOA’s architectural approval is a third gate, and it doesn’t care what the township said.
Ask every fence company one question at the estimate: “Who pulls the zoning permit?” The good ones say “we do, and we’ll need your survey.” The ones that say “you don’t need one for a six-foot fence” are half right, and that half will cost you a stop-work order and a $200 re-inspection when the neighbor calls the township.
Pool fences: the code is not optional
New Jersey’s construction code adopts the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code for barriers. In plain terms: a pool needs a barrier at least 48 inches high measured from the outside, gaps small enough that a four-inch sphere can’t pass through, no climbable horizontal rails on the outside face, and gates that are self-closing and self-latching with the latch release set high enough that a small child can’t reach it. Above-ground pools have their own ladder and barrier rules. A pool fence is permitted work with an inspection, and it’s tied to your pool permit — you can’t get the pool signed off without it.
Aluminum picket is the default pool fence in South Jersey because it meets the spacing rule out of the box and doesn’t warp in the sun. Vinyl privacy works too if the gate hardware is right. Whatever you pick, get the fence company to confirm in writing that the gate hardware is pool-code compliant — that’s the part inspectors fail.

How to vet a fence company before the deposit
- Get the 13VH number and look it up. Every NJ home-improvement contractor — fence companies included — must be registered with the Division of Consumer Affairs. Here’s the two-minute check.
- Who pulls the zoning permit, and do they need your survey? See above.
- Post depth and footing. In South Jersey’s sandy soil, posts need to go below frost line (roughly 30–36 inches) and be set in concrete. A fence that leans after the first nor’easter had shallow posts.
- Two warranties. The manufacturer’s (Illusions, for example, publishes a lifetime limited warranty on its vinyl) and the installer’s workmanship warranty. Both in writing.
- Written contract with dates. NJ requires one for any home-improvement job over $500. Fence season runs April–October; a contract without an install window is a contract for whenever.
