Three things to know before you get a window or door quote in South Jersey

1. Same opening, no permit — with two exceptions. Under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7, replacing a window or door (garage doors included) in the same opening without changing its size or framing is ordinary maintenance. You need a permit if you enlarge the opening or add a new one, and you can’t shrink a bedroom egress window below the required clear opening. Historic districts in Haddonfield, Collingswood, Moorestown, Salem and Cape May add a preservation review that sits outside the construction code.

2. The federal window tax credit is gone. The 25C credit for ENERGY STAR windows and doors expired December 31, 2025. Neither Atlantic City Electric nor PSE&G offers a standalone window rebate. A 2026 quote that mentions “30% back from the IRS” is running last year’s pitch.

3. Frame material matters more at the shore. Vinyl is fine from Cherry Hill to Vineland. In Ocean City, Sea Isle, Brigantine and anywhere with salt air, fiberglass or composite holds up better and doesn’t chalk. Pre-war homes in Collingswood, Woodbury and Haddon Township with out-of-square openings usually need a full-frame install, not an insert — get that decision written into the estimate.

🛠️ SOUTH JERSEY TIP

The window business runs on three-hour in-home presentations and “today only” pricing. A quote that expires when the salesperson leaves your driveway is a quote you should let expire. Ask whether the people installing are the company’s own crew or a sub hired last month, get both warranties in writing (manufacturer on the unit, installer on the labor), and look up the 13VH number before the deposit.
